Understanding Body Fat Percentage
Body fat percentage is a more informative fitness metric than weight or BMI alone because it separates fat mass from lean mass (muscle, bone, organs, water). This calculator uses the Navy circumference method, which requires measurements of neck, waist, and hips (for women) — no calipers or equipment needed. It provides a reasonable estimate for most healthy adults.
Healthy body fat ranges vary by sex and age. For men, 10–20% is generally considered fit; for women, 18–28%. Athletes may be in the 6–15% range. Keep in mind that no formula-based method is perfectly accurate — DEXA scans are the gold standard if precision is critical. Take measurements in the morning before eating for the most consistent results.
